Purpose and Meaning
The Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, instituted by Jesus Christ to convey God’s grace to those facing serious illness or the frailty of old age (CCC 1511; Mark 6:13; Jas. 5:14-15). It is intended to strengthen the sick person spiritually, provide peace and courage, and unite their suffering with the Passion of Christ. While it can sometimes bring physical healing, its primary effect is spiritual healing, helping the recipient endure illness with faith and hope.
Eligibility
The sacrament is not reserved only for those near death. Any Catholic who has reached the age of reason and is seriously ill, facing a major medical procedure, or experiencing the effects of old age may receive it. It can also be repeated if a new illness develops or an existing condition worsens. The sacrament is administered only to the living, and only a priest or bishop may perform it.
